Overview

Enjoy this Outlander Day Tour from Edinburgh.  Explore the filming locations made famous by the TV series. In only one day, experience Midhope Castle: Outlander’s Lallybroch, spend time in Falkland, the set for Inverness in Outlander and enjoy your visit at Culross; home of Claire’s herb garden and Cranesmuir Village’s Mercat.

Departing from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the Outlander tour travels north-west. You will venture to Midhope Castle, the 16th Century Tower House was the backdrop to Outlander’s ‘Lallybroch Castle’: Jamie Fraser’s home. Pause for some photos here to soak in the atmospheric surroundings before you journey onwards.

Following in the footsteps of Claire and Jamie, the Outlander tour continues to Blackness Castle*, an optional extra on this tour. The Headquarters of Outlander’s Black Jack Randall, representing Fort William, on the shores of the Firth of Forth. This castle dates back to the 15th Century; home to the Crichton family, its mighty fortifications make this ancient castle look like a ‘ship that never sailed’. Spend time here exploring its magnificent walls and enjoy breathtaking views over the Firth of Forth.

Then, the journey continues to the Royal Burgh of Linlithgow, where you will have the opportunity to visit Linlithgow Palace*, Outlander’s ‘Wentworth Prison’. The Royal Family would use the palace to rest on journeys between Edinburgh and Stirling Castle. Its impressive towers overlook stunning scenery. There will be some leisure time to purchase refreshments and explore the town.

You then travel to the Royal Burgh of Culross. A tiny village nestled on the coast of Fife, Culross is arguably the best example of a 17th Century village in Scotland. The gardens here feature in Claire’s herb garden, and the Mercat Cross in Outlanders’ Cranesmuir Village. Here you stop with plenty of time to explore the village and its cobbled streets and quaint Biscuit Café.

Your final stop of this Outlander day tour from Edinburgh day is Falkland. The small village in Fife was used as the set for Inverness in Outlander; Claire and Frank arrive here for their second honeymoon. The Covenanter Hotel in the village is also the set where Claire saw the ghost of Jamie. Spend time exploring this quaint village, enjoy refreshments and, should you wish, you can visit Falkland Palace* and Gardens.

Your journey home takes you to South Queensferry. There will be a stop to take photos and to enjoy the beautiful views over the Firth of Forth, before heading back to Edinburgh, where your unique Outlander tour ends.

*Please note: Linlithgow Palace will reopen from Saturday 10th June. The King’s Bed Chamber and the Court Kitchen will remain closed and so they are running reduced admission prices.

Please Note: Prices are seasonal and will change throughout the year. The price for your selected date may differ from the “from” price. From the 1st of April 2024, this tour has a new itinerary.
